Overview

Publication of your thesis by the University of Toronto is a requirement of your degree, and U of T’s default position is that there be no restriction on distribution. Theses are released after each convocation and made freely available online. In exceptional cases, you may request a delayed release embargo).

Acceptable reasons for an embargo

• You are currently seeking journal publication or publication of the thesis as a book.
• The thesis contains sensitive content whose publication might endanger you or persons associated with the work.
• A patent is in process.

How to request an embargo

The process has three steps:

• Step 1: During your ProQuest submission, request an embargo in the Publishing Options section.
  • You may request 1 year or 2 years.
  • An embargo beyond 2 years requires additional approval; contact SGS at sgs.masters@utoronto.ca for instructions.
• Step 2: Download and complete the Restrict Thesis Release request form (dated and signed by your graduate unit chair).
• Step 3: Upload and submit the completed form to SGS via MS Forms prior to your convocation.

While an embargo is in effect, the abstract and citation for your thesis will be visible in the database, but the full text will not be available. Discuss the decision to embargo with your supervisor and the graduate chair of your department.
