Graduate funding

The University of Toronto is increasing the base funding commitment for
all PhD/SJD students in the funded cohort to $40,000, inclusive of tuition, effective Fall 2025.

Graduate students are a key engine of our university’s success, driving cutting-edge research and innovation across all disciplines. This increased funding package will reduce some of the financial pressure on students and improve the overall graduate student experience. See below for further details and read the U of T news story.

Who is eligible for the increase?

  • The funding increase is only applicable to current and new PhD/SJD students in the funded cohort of their program in Fall 2025. If they aren’t sure if they are in the funded cohort as of Fall 2025, they should check with their graduate administrator.
  • At this time, the increase only applies to PhD/SJD graduate students.
  • The objective of the increase is to bring all PhD/SJD graduate students up to $40,000 ($31,000 net of tuition) by increasing the base funding commitment.

How do students receive the increase?

The funding increase will be applied automatically to PhD/SJD students in the funded cohort in Fall 2025.
